Why Oral Care Matters During Orthodontic Treatment
Whether you’re wearing braces or Invisalign, maintaining excellent oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment is essential. At Krass Orthodontics in Ellicott City, MD, Dr. David emphasizes that taking care of your teeth and gums throughout treatment helps ensure the best possible results — and a healthy, beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime.
Brushing with Braces
When you have braces, food particles and plaque can easily become trapped around brackets and wires. Without proper brushing, this can lead to cavities, gum inflammation, and even permanent white spots on your teeth. Here’s how to brush effectively with braces:
- Brush after every meal and before bed — at minimum, four times a day
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush with an orthodontic head
- Angle the brush at 45 degrees to clean above and below each bracket
- Brush each tooth individually using small circular motions
- Don’t forget the chewing surfaces and the inside of your teeth
- Spend at least two minutes brushing each time
Interdental Brushes
Small interdental brushes (also called proxy brushes or Christmas tree brushes) are excellent for cleaning between brackets and under wires where your regular toothbrush can’t reach. Dr. David recommends keeping a few in your bag or at your desk for on-the-go cleaning after meals.
Flossing During Orthodontic Treatment
Flossing with braces requires a little extra patience, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for your oral health during treatment. Plaque that builds up between teeth can lead to cavities and gum disease, so daily flossing is non-negotiable.
Here are the best methods for flossing with braces:
- Floss threaders: These flexible loops help you thread regular floss under the archwire so you can floss between each tooth
- Orthodontic flossers: Pre-threaded flossers designed specifically for braces
- Water flossers: Devices like Waterpik use a pressurized stream of water to flush food particles and bacteria from around brackets and between teeth — many patients find these easier and faster than traditional floss
Caring for Your Invisalign Aligners
If you’re straightening your teeth with Invisalign, oral hygiene is simpler since you remove your aligners to eat and brush. However, it’s still important to maintain good habits:
- Brush and floss before reinserting your aligners after every meal or snack
- Clean your aligners daily by gently brushing them with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water (avoid hot water, which can warp them)
- Don’t eat or drink anything other than water while wearing your aligners — colored beverages can stain them
- Soak your aligners in Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture cleaner periodically to keep them fresh
The Right Diet for a Healthy Smile
What you eat during orthodontic treatment affects both your oral health and the integrity of your braces. With braces, avoid hard, sticky, and crunchy foods that can damage brackets and wires. Focus on nutrient-rich foods that support healthy teeth and gums:
- Calcium-rich foods: Dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods strengthen teeth
- Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, strawberries, and bell peppers support gum health
- Water: Staying hydrated helps wash away food particles and bacteria
- Lean proteins: Fish, chicken, and eggs provide nutrients for tissue repair
Dealing with Common Issues
Even with the best care, you may encounter minor issues during treatment. Here’s how to handle them:
Sore Teeth After Adjustments
It’s normal to experience mild soreness for a day or two after an adjustment. Over-the-counter pain relievers, cold foods, and saltwater rinses can help. The discomfort is temporary and means your teeth are moving!
Irritation from Brackets or Wires
If a bracket or wire is rubbing against the inside of your cheek or lips, apply orthodontic wax over the area for relief. If a wire is poking you, call our office at (410) 465-5945 so we can trim or adjust it.
Broken Brackets or Loose Wires
Contact Krass Orthodontics right away if a bracket comes loose or a wire breaks. Don’t attempt to fix it yourself. In the meantime, use wax to cover any sharp edges and avoid hard or sticky foods.
Regular Check-Ups Are Key
Your regular appointments at our Ellicott City office are about more than just adjusting your braces. They’re an opportunity for Dr. David and our team to:
- Monitor your treatment progress
- Check for any signs of decay or gum issues
- Clean around brackets and hard-to-reach areas
- Address any concerns you have
We also recommend continuing to see your general dentist for regular cleanings every six months during orthodontic treatment. Professional cleanings complement your at-home care and help keep your smile in top shape.
Protecting Your Investment
Orthodontic treatment is an investment in your health, confidence, and future. By taking excellent care of your teeth during treatment, you’re ensuring that when your braces come off or you finish your last Invisalign tray, your smile will be not only straight but healthy and bright.
After treatment, wearing your retainers as directed is just as important as the care you put in during treatment. Dr. David will provide clear instructions on retainer wear to protect your beautiful results.
